COVID-19 CENSORSHIP

Summary of the case

Class action in damages and in injunction against Facebook and YouTube for their censorship concerning Covid-19.

Members of the class

Any physical or legal person, who has used or visited Facebook or YouTube since March 15, 2020, and whose Covid-19 related content, either directly or indirectly, was censored or who was prevented from viewing such content when they intended to do it, while they were residing in Quebec or had an establishment.

HISTORY

In January 2022, Éloïse Boies filed an application to be authorized to start a class action against Google LLC, who owns YouTube. Ms. Boies was censored at several occasions on the platform for publishing Covid-19 related content.

In August 2022, Christian Leray filed an application to be authorized to start a class action against Meta Platforms inc., who owns Facebook. Mr. Leray is involved with Réinfo Québec, a group that has criticized the position of the health authorities during the pandemic.

On April 29, 2024, the Superior Court authorized both class action to start.

Status of the case

The class actions were authorized or certified as of April 29, 2024.
The notice to the members of the class will be transmitted soon.
